Re the recruitment I do have faith in BR improving the players we have bought. It’s too tempting to write Engels Yang off too quickly. That said I really worry about our processes for identifying players and getting recruitment done quickly at the best price.
Surely, if Miller is that good we should have snapped him up months ago. His price will be getting hyped. As for KT, Jota and Schlupp they seemed to have miraculously dropped in our lap and are little to do with the process. Where’s the far east recruitment now for example?
Very interesting podcast. Do you guys have a background in accountancy or corporate finance? I remember during the rangers insolvency years, so called experts and ex pros totally misunderstood the complexities of the SFA rules and the financial ramifications. This potential investment is rather different but you both seem to understand the ramifications.
Tony Schwartz served as the ghostwriter for “The Art of the Deal.” Given the current application of such strategies to geopolitics, a more fitting title could be "Shart of the Deal."
I think it’s fair to say that we overpaid for Engels, however an element of that fee was to placate the fans, who were determined that the board should spend cash, and because it was no secret that we had the O’Riley money… also McCowan is 27…
That’s 100% correct- there was a baying mob outside Celtic park demanding we spend cash on anything because we’d had such an underwhelming transfer window - I think we could have bought anyone and I’m grateful we got Engels. I get what James says about performance in Scotland maybe isn’t that startling but based on my ignorant eye test I thought Engels was a difference maker in Europe particularly as the campaign went on - he didn’t look out of place whereas McCowan did (who I also really like btw)
