Woof! I'm all over the place. Wild 2-3 weeks personally, beyondthe footie, THEN we qualify for the UCL playoffs, lose Kyogo AND re-sign Jota (with persistent rumors of KT returning and talk of a young striker on the horizon).
Is there a 15 syllable German compound word for simultaneous grief and elation? HH
1. James is right, Jota can't play Villa because the Euro squad is set till the play off round.
2. Celtic were actually a Pot 3 side for the draw this season, so we did have games against "lower rated" sides. A traditional four team group against our draw would probably have been OK.
Our opponents from each pot were:
1. Leipzig and Dortmund
2. Atalanta and Brugge
3. YBB and Zagreb (forget them)
4. Villa and Bratislava
Of the eight possible groups that gives us, only one (Dortmund, Atalanta and Villa) is a massive problem. Leipzig, Brugge and Slovan would probably have seen us challenging for the last 16.
There's only a 25% chance we don't get Slovan or Leipzig, so a great shot at 3rd or better.
Fortunately the industry/market remains populated by a lot of 'dumb money' and that includes many that are trying to use data but not doing so in a sophisticated way, IMO.
I think you raise good points - smart money do a better job to isolate players' idiosyncratic value (Brighton/O'Riley and Brentford/Ajer) and play them in roles that suit them within their playing styles. Note that Brentford have played Ajer on the outside of a back 3 or as a fullback, for example.
Jota was a one-off of dumb money that is unlikely to occur again. In addition, how many of those big sales were done in a proactive and strategic way when player values were near peak AND to clubs who suit their career advancement?
Yeah good points I agree with. Almost reassuring the smart money is picking up players from us, they must feel there is value there. Ajer has been fairly successful and I'm hopeful for MOR after his early setback.
What's the teams thoughts on how the return of Jota (and presumably KT) looks for our overall market selling stance? 2 of our biggest sales coming back for 'small' fees is great for us short term but I worry it dampens our image for future buyers.
Most of our big sales havent had a great time after leaving Celtic (Eddy, Dembele, Jota, KT). Decent enough for KT and Dembele but neither really pushing on.
If I was a club in the future thinking of buying our next big thing for 15mil+ (Kuhn?) Id be looking at how previous big sales performed as a risk balance against over performance in the weaker Scottish League. I think it potentially might put future buyers off, or force them to try negotiate price down to balance the risk.

Time will tell!
